Applying to Tufts Online

Applying online to Tufts is easy, reliable and makes the entire application process smoother for applicants and the admissions office. Please take few moments to learn all about our electronic application and why we prefer students to apply over the web.

It is easier than the paper application No typewriters, no whiteout, no postage. Students who used the electronic application last year told us how convenient applying to Tufts was compared to other schools who use paper. The online system guides students through the process and keeps their application organized. It even checks their application for errors and makes sure they didn't forget any important information.
The process moves faster

A student's electronic application is usually on our system within two days after it is submitted. A traditional paper application takes a long journey before arriving in our office and takes many steps once at Tufts. The electronic application bypasses it all!
Betters a student's chances for an Alumni Interview Because the process is faster, students have a better chance of securing an Alumni interview so that the results are available earlier in the review process.
Allows students to apply to many colleges with a single application While we don't see why students would want to apply to any other schools, Embark uses the Common Application format and allows students to submit a single application to many of the country's top colleges and universities.

Complete the Supplementary Form.  Submit this part of the application and the $70 application fee as soon as possible. This will get the application into the cycle and initiate the alumni interview process. The information here is straightforward: name, address, high school, program and interests.

*Tufts now uses its own version of the online Supplemental Form.  If the Supplemental Form was started before 10/3, however, go here to access it.

Complete the Common Application. In order to use the Common Application, the student will need to set up an account to access his or her application. The application can be saved and accessed as many times as needed before the final submission.

Essays can be composed in any word processing software of the student's choice. They can be cut and pasted into the Supplemental Form and application when they are ready to be sent.

Other Credentials, such as transcripts and recommendations, that can not be submitted electronically can be mailed to our office at:
Office of Undergraduate Admissions
Bendetson Hall
Tufts University
Medford, MA 02155

Credential materials should be marked clearly with name and social security number. These materials will be matched to your electronic application.

Once the Application is submitted the student will receive a confirmation email, and within within a couple of weeks will receive an Acknowledgement in the mail. Starting in October, students will be able to check the status of your application online using the Tufts Application Management System (TAMS) within one week of submitting the application. TAMS is live each year from October through May.

Students can always contact us with questions about the status of your application at any time.

I don't trust the web. Is this reliable ? Information entered on the electronic application is loaded directly to our system and is quite reliable. In fact, electronic information takes far fewer steps to get into our process and has significantly fewer opportunities for error.

But can't info get lost or jumbled in transmission? We have found that the electronic transfer of data is actually more reliable than US Post. Students will receive a confirmation from both our office and the online application vendor. Within two weeks students will receive a letter from our office and a password and ID for checking the status of their applications over the web.

Students are always free to contact the Admissions office if they have concerns at any point in the process.

Is it secure? Very much so. Our application platform uses the same encryption that banks use. Information is private and paying with a credit card is very safe. For those who are uncomfortable with paying over the web, the application can be completed on-line and a check can be sent directly to the Tufts Admissions Office.

Do you need to be a computer whiz? You don't need to be a "techie". The application is laid out exactly like our paper application and the system even guides you through each step. If a student can read and use a computer keyboard, he or she has the skills necessary to complete the web application. Many students have told us that they were apprehensive about applying online but after completing the application were amazed at how simple it was.

Can Tufts look at an application before it is ready? No. No one can see an application until it is submitted.  Applications can be saved and modified an unlimited number of times before submitting.

What will an application look like to the committee? Students can print their applications using the free Adobe Acrobat reader. This is the same exact printout that we use to read an application. It is very clear and easy for us to read.

But this seems impersonal. We get to know a student as an individual from the content of his or her application, not his or her penmanship. Hand writing an application, or wrestling with a typewriter, does not matter to the committee at all. The online application allows students to correct errors and even helps find them before we ever see it. The printout we read is clean and professional.
